Feb 1, 2015: Our club members: Vitraag Mehta, Zhiqi Wang and Victor Liu represented the Genesee Valley Table Tennis Club at the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association regionals at RIT on Feb 1, 2015. They performed creditably as a team, working hard and winning a few good matches against some pretty tough competition. In the individual competition our young stalwart, Vitraag, made it all the way to the finals before, perhaps fatigue took its toll after a busy weekend of winning an Acapella competition at Syracuse U as part of a co-ed U of R team, losing to a more fired-up Willian Sueyasu of SUNY, Buffalo in three closely fought games. Along the way he had some good wins notably twice against Navneeth Ramprasad of Syracuse (a teammate of our club's Jason Zou, who made the elimination stage of the individual event as well). Navneeth is a former member of the Indian Junior National Team, he won a match against Willian Sueyasu in the team event.
This event was organized by the RIT Table Tennis Club under the guidance of Ray Mack, it was very well run and a large, co-ed group of enthusiastic college students came out in pretty harsh weather to compete. Showing table tennis is popular even among the young, college age crowd who we assume are more drawn to "big-money" sports.
Our club played an integral role in getting the U of R students into the event by acting as a sponsoring entity and the above photo shows monday leaguers Zhiqi Wang and Victor Liu along with Vitraag, holding the club shirt he wore during his matches. It showed the club off in a good way, and hopefully some of the students there will register for our Feb 27-Mar 1, 2015 tournament coming up.
